(More customer reviews)I'm with the other reviewer here.I looked over the kestrel accessories and bought their portable weather vane which needs a smallish tripod to hold it on the ground, or a large tripod if you are sheltered and want accurate wind data.
This is overpriced for its size.Small metal tripods cost less and have more features. And they hold the kestrel windvane fine.
Put your money into the windvane and you will get a better return - then find a tripod suited to your use.if you are on clear ground 30 cm - 1m is fine, but if you have buildings or fences, consider a 2-3 meter tripod because the winds up there are much stronger than down low.My permanent weather station is attached to the back of my security camera above my house - it has nothing blocking it just like the camera has no shadows.
Also keep in mind you can buy the tripod without a head if its just for the kestrel, since you want it level and thats it.Opteka makes a very nice80 cm - 2.4 m tripod with a built in bubble level and magnetic compass in the "head" (but it remains level and has no handle) - it's meant to have a head attached and is built from super strong reinforced carbon fiber.with the compass you can check your kestrel's internal compass in "Magnetic" mode as opposed to "true" mode quite fast.If you just want to do level photography and weather data you don't need a head on the tripod section, but if you want pan and tilt functions, the head is manditory and adds weight.By itself the tripod weighed a KG at most and came with a protective bag that will hold you kestel sub-bags for data gathering and for windvane. It's in the products I've reviewed - look for a tripod by itself (no head attached) and ideal for this application.
Otherwise, small (1 foot) tripods are dirt cheap these days so a specialized version just for weather data is not a good investment when you can get kestrel's windvane version with the precision pivot for rotation and a cup to hold the tripod.
