I was given the Outback as a gift, and damned if I wasn't skeptical.Generally, I avoid buying anything that requires batteries, and I wasn't sure I wanted to rely on a battery powered device to guide me through the wilderness. Furthermore, I already knew how to use a traditional spinning needle compass, and I wasn't sure if I was up to the task of learning how to use the Outback. But, I was proven wrong. The Outback is easier and more fun to use than a regular compass and it is loaded with features. As for performance, I have been using it quite a bit to learn all the functions and the batteries are still running strong (the instruction manual says it will run for about 200 hours on 1 battery ).Beyond easy to use, the Outback has a lot of different menu options but one of the neatest is the Trail Blazer Menu that tracks and memorizes your course as you travel.Once you get to your destination, you can program the Outback to reverse your course so you can end up standing in the very place you left from. There are a couple of other menus that I'm still learning about but what I like most is that the Outback is super easy to read and so far has been very accurate.I have been trying to get it to screw up, but it won't.The LCD display is big and easy to read showing headings and digits, cardinal points, and on the compass rose.It also has a back light option so you can illuminate the screen to maintain your course in the dark.No doubt, I highly recommend this product over any other compass out there. The only thing I can imagine to improve it would be a case that attaches to your belt, that would make it easier to get at, but then again, it has a lanyard so a belt loop case isn't really necessary.

Standard Horizon STD-HX471SB Handheld VHF Marine Radio (Black) Review

Standard Horizon STD-HX471SB Handheld VHF Marine Radio
Average Reviews:

These radios were over $350.00...Now that newer models have arrived you can purchase for approx $100 less. Radio has several bands (Air, FMS, AM/FM etc.) in addition to marine radio.
Reception is very clear and the compact unit is solid quality. We have used for approx 3 years with no problems. Sound is very good at all volume levels except at full volume you get some distortion. However, you do not need full volume to clearly hear.
You won't go wrong with this feature packed radio.

Product Description:
Keep on top of emergencies, stay in touch with other boaters, and even listen to your favorite AM and FM radio stations with the Standard Horizon STD-HX471SB handheld two-way VHF radio. Specifically designed for marine use, the HX471SB is factory programmed with all U.S., Canadian, and international marine channels, letting you communicate easily with other ocean-going vessels. At the same time, the radio receives a host of weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), so you can learn about approaching storms or hurricanes well before they hit. And should you want to call your friends or family on shore or sing along to your favorite station, the HX471SB can handle that, too. The radio's Family Radio Service (FRS) band accommodates your ship-to-shore communications, while the AM, FM, and aeronautical bands give you a ton of listening options. Simply put, the HX471SB lets you monitor a range of frequencies previously unavailable in any portable marine VHF radio.
As with any well-built marine radio, the HX471SB is rugged and fully waterproof, with a high-impact, non-corrosive, black die-cast chassis that can withstand a high degree of physical abuse while also standing up to submersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. Want a submersible radio to take hiking, skiing, hunting, or caravanning? Look no further. It's also a breeze to browse through the channels using the scan function either without priority (starting from lowest to highest) or while monitoring emergency channels. And should you want to scan between a VHF marine channel and a FRS channel, simply activate the Dual Watch function. Other operational details include an NOAA weather alert function that notifies you of impending severe weather, a Preset key that lets you store up to 10 channels for each band, and a high-intensity strobe light that emits the internally recognized S.O.S. signal during emergencies--a must for any boater. The S.O.S. beacon can be seen from up to 1 mile away.
Another nice feature is the NMEA charging cradle that lets you connect the radio to a GPS. Once connected, the radio stores your GPS location in its memory, and then notifies the Coast Guard or other emergency service should an accident occur. In the event of a distress, simply grab the HX471SB, lift the Distress cover, and depress the Distress key for three seconds. The radio will then transmit a distress call with your position while simultaneously activating the strobe light.
Packaged with a 1,300 mAh lithium-ion battery, HX471SB delivers 10 to 12 hours of operation on a single charge. Plus, the battery is guaranteed never to develop a "memory" that inhibits its ability to work for a full day. To charge, simply attach either the AC or 12-volt DC cable to the charging cradle and you're set (charging time is roughly three hours).
The radio, which also comes with a quick-draw belt clip, measures 2.36 by 3.78 by 1.12 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty.
What's in the Box
Handheld marine VHF radio, rechargeable battery, AC charger, 12-volt DC charger with cigarette lighter plug, charging cradle, user's manual.

Alpine IVA-D310 CD receiver with 7" LCD Review

Alpine IVA-D310 CD receiver with 7' LCD
Average Reviews:

Good unit with great sound.Great with radio and CDs.But the main reason I got it was to use it with my iPod.This is where this item falls flat.First off, you have to buy an adapter (KCA-420i) just to get the iPod controls to the head unit.

Once you've done that, you'll find out (I did the hard way) that the data transfer b/w the iPod and deck is ungodly slow. Not music wise, but music info wise. It's extremely sluggish scrolling through songs/artists/albums.So I've basically been playing it on shuffle.

But now and then, you feel like listening to a specific song/album.You can do that with this deck, but be prepared to take time to scroll to the item.

I will be switching this deck for the IVA-D106 which is much faster.

Cheers.

Lowrance X-52 4-Inch Waterproof Fishfinder Review

Lowrance X-52 4 inch Waterproof Fishfinder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't like to do reviews of products that have been in use for a short time because on important future of a product such as this is its longevity. That being said, I have had this product installed for about 3 weeks now and it is working OK, no problems. When I bought my bass boat 6 years ago it came with a Lowrance X-51 fishfinder installed in the instrument panel. I live in Florida and use the boat about 30 times a year. Four weeks ago I pushed the X-51 power button and the screen was blank and I couldn't turn the unit off. I called Lowrance, explained the symptoms and informed them I tried the reset procedure with no success. So they told me the X-51 was done with. In buying a new fishfinder I wanted to accomplish two things; to use the same cutout hole in the dash and to use the already installed transducer. So, I asked Lowrance if there was a current model that would fit those requirements. To my astonishment the customer service rep said no. So I looked around the internet and chat rooms and found a contributor that had a similar problem and had been successful in replacing his broken X-51 with an X-52. So, I bought the X-52 and it met my requirements. I don't understand why Lowrance's CS rep did not know this but I guess this reinforces their poor CS reputation. In searching the internet for the best price I found Amazon to be the lowest at $179, with free shipping. Delivery was fast. I have found Amazon to be reliable and often have the best prices on many items so always check them when shopping on the internet.

Bushnell Yardage Pro Scout Laser Rangefinder Review

Bushnell Yardage Pro Scout Laser Rangefinder
Average Reviews:

I purchased the Bushnell Yardage Pro Scout for my son for his birthday and he absolutely loves it.I have a Nikon compact 800 laser rangefinder that I thought was best small package laser rangefinder available, that is until I saw the Pro Scout.
I still like the Nikon, but the Pro Scout works equally well, with just slightly less range capability. The big plus for the Pro Scout is it's size.It is about half or less the size and weight of the Nikon (or Bushnell) 800 compact and comes with a pouch that when it's on your belt you almost don't notice it's there.
If I didn't already have the Nikon, I would buy a Pro Scout for myself in a minute.

Product Description:
The Bushnell Yardage Pro Scout compact laser rangefinder can display the distance of a larger object up to 700 yds. The monocular design provides continuous distance measurement as multiple targets in the field of view are scanned. Battery included. Color: Hunter Green.
Hunting and golfing will never be the same with the Bushnell Yardage Pro Scout. Its 10- to 700-yard range with 1-yard accuracy (plus or minus, without reflectors or special devices) makes it perfect for golfing, bow hunting, and archery. The pocket-sized Pro Scout is water resistant and comes with a standard 3-volt battery.
How a Laser Rangefinder Works
Bushnell's Yardage Pro rangefinders use an invisible, eye-safe Class 1 Laser beam (as classified by the FDA) which is "bounced" off distant objects with the press of a button. Then, the rangefinder's high-speed digital clock measures the time it took for a laser beam to reach a target and return to the unit. Next, using advanced digital electronics, the rangefinder instantly calculates the distance within + / - 1 yard and shows the range in either yards or meters on a through-the-lens LCD Display. The entire process is so fast that less than a second elapses between the time you press the button to generate a laser beam to the time the exact range to your target is displayed.
Reflectivity of Target Types
Because rangefinders "bounce" a laser beam off the target in order to take a measurement, their range is partially determined by the reflectivity of the target. In other words, hard or "reflective" targets - like a rock cliff or semi-truck - can be measured at greater distances than soft surface targets - like a deer. Ranges for moderately reflective targets, like trees, fall somewhere in the middle. Most experienced hunters will use their rangefinder to frequently estimate ranges to near and distant landmarks before they actually encounter a game animal. By "pre-measuring" ranges to spots where a trophy is likely to appear, they can concentrate on making an accurate shot when the moment of truth arrives.
Through-the-lens LCD Display
Bushnell Yardage Pro rangefinders are fast and easy to use because everything you need to know is displayed on our built-in, through-the-lens LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). Here's how it works:
A. Targeting Modes
Scan
The Scan mode allows you to pan across the landscape while viewing a continuously updated LCD display of the distances between you and the targets you scan with the viewfinder.
Rain
This feature compensates for precipitation to guarantee an accurate distance measurement through rain or snow.
Zip
Zip allows you to accurately measure longer ranges (beyond 150 yards) when looking through foreground clutter like brush or branches.
Reflector
This feature increases the maximum measurement range for most highly reflective objects.

B. Meters/Yards
You can quickly choose between these standard measuring units with a simple press of a button.
C. Reticle
The distance to objects targeted in these crosshairs will be displayed on the Distance Readout with the press of a button.
D. Battery Indictor
Flashes when battery power is low.
E. Target Quality Gauge
Gauge indicating amount of energy pulses being received back from the target.
